• The Smithers Art Gallery requires a Summer Intern who will be responsible for:


    - organising, promoting, and teaching summer art programs for children and youth including, but not limited to, two week-long art camps (ages 5-11yrs) and drop-in art activities every Saturday morning (all ages);

    - undertaking community outreach;

    - performing market research;

    - gallery staffing to open the gallery to the public;

    - assisting with the general administration of the gallery;

    - other duties as required.


    The Summer Intern works very autonomously. We are looking for an energetic self-starter with a creative spirit and the ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a small team. Preference will be given to candidates with an interest or training in fine arts and/or education including Early Childhood Education. Preference will be given to qualified First Nations applicants. Competency in MS Office programs including Excel and Publisher, and confidence in dealing with the general public an advantage.

    Reports to: Gallery Manager, Smithers Art Gallery

    Salary: dependent upon experience

    Hours: 35 hrs/week

    Hiring period: May/June through August including Saturdays (start/end dates and days worked will be negotiated and agreed between the Gallery and the successful applicant)


    Required Qualifications:

    • Must be aged 19-30 yrs

    • Full-time returning post-secondary student (must have been registered as a full-time student in the previous year and be returning to school full-time in the next academic year)

    • Legally entitled to work in Canada, between 19 and 30 years of age, and a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or have refugee status in Canada.

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; fluent in English

    • Must be willing to undertake a Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment


    Desirable Skills & Attributes:

    • An interest or training in: fine arts and/or education including Early Childhood Education

    • Experience working with children or youth

    • Proven computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, data entry, Facebook

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team

    • Ability to forge relationships with individuals and their organizations

    • Confidence in dealing with the general public and children of all ages

    • Events management or marketing experience

    • Exhibits an energetic and creative spirit, ethical approach to work, and willingness to try new ideas

    • Experience working in the non-profit sector is desirable

    • Driving licence and vehicle an asset

    Did you know the Smithers Art Gallery rents out the gallery space?


    The gallery is available for rental outside of the hours we are open to the public. It has a well-lit interior with great acoustics and ample room for hosting events such as meetings, workshops and music coffeehouses. The Central Park Building, the art gallery, and the washrooms are all wheelchair-accessible.


    Facilities include:

    - 30 folding chairs

    - five 6'x2.5' trestle tables

    - kitchen facilities (sink, coffee-maker, kettle, microwave, crockery, and glasses)



    $15/hour members*, 20/hour non-members

    plus a separate $50 damage deposit. The damage deposit will be returned at the end of your event if no damage has been done to the gallery.

    Please allow time for set-up and clearing up after your event in your rental booking.

    Contact us by phone or email to make sure the date you are requesting is available - we will make a provisional booking for you which will be confirmed once you have signed the rental agreement and made payment.
